Collage Paintings
Juxtaposing archetypal symbols, following in Rosenquist's footsteps.
With the collage paintings, I want to use layers as an allegory for thought, and symbols for association that might invite interpretations from many cultures. The paintings explore ethics, anthropology, faith and spirituality.

2004 Watercolor 42 x 42 $1500 A painting about the US involvement in Iraq. I was living in Bangkok when the US military bombed Iraq with a preemptive strike. At the time, there was some uncertainty about the justifications for the war, I became invested in concern for L. Paul Bremer, the ambassador to Iraq. Later I wrote him a letter and received a personal response.

2012 Watercolor 38 x 38 I continue to look for inspiration for the negative space of my paintings - something that isn't simply filler. Design ornaments sometimes stand out to me as I page through a magazine, as is the case with this fleur de lis. My medium doesn't lend itself easily to clean, graphic contrast, so I kept the drips and runs. An experience in a yurt earlier this year has continued to motivate me. This one is a personal painting.

2002 Watercolor 60 x 84 Two images sewn together with "WWJD" shoe laces. Large scale watercolor paper, I bought while in art school. This was one of the first full sized (larger than life) portraits I did on watercolor paper. It hangs in Lubbock, Texas.

2013 Guache 10 x 11 $50 Colorist and American painter Wayne Thiebaud is a hero. I love looking at his oil painting - the Haloing effect he ads to simple subjects. As I grow in my understanding of color and theory, Thiebaud pushes the conventions of representative painting. I learn by mimicking his stuff. Also, this is a first for me, using guache.
Sometimes I work from paintings of artists I admire. This is based on a Stephen Quiller painting. He does landscapes, but I love his use of color theory.
